Not a very inspiring post this month, but where I work throws out these empty coffee containers rather than clean them out and let people come up with uses for them.
Me? These tins have lids that close tightly making them perfect to be reused as a food waste* bin for the kitchen – as the one I liberated a week ago is currently used for. I collect food waste in the flat I live in during the week and then take it home to the garden compost heap at the weekend. AND this replaces my old food waste bin whose lid decided to stop closing properly, with predictable results.

I wish I had access to some of these. I have a shelf unit which is currently filled with open top boxes and containers of all different sizes, and I need something a bit more regular to make better use of the space. It would also keep whiffly wet dog noses out of my stuff…. Oh, and it might make a good container for dry dog food for trips in the caravan. And a small counter top bin for the caravan. And a waterproof container for laundry detergent for the caravan. And…. well, you get the idea. Down Under, we still only have the cylindrical tins for coffee; not a good storage shape.

clever re-purposing and as Kate points out there are a dozen different uses around the house, workshop and studio to save the containers from the dump.

But you should mention that the old container has found a new use that doesn’t require it to seal, so there has been even less waste.

Very true – the old container now holds spaghetti, proving you’re never really pasta it. Sorry.

Good on you for repurposing what someone else would just toss out! Using those containers to collect food waste is a great idea.

It helped that the opportunity to save the tin coincided with getting fed up with the lid continually falling off the old bin! I actually rescued another coffee tin, a smaller version of this one, that I am using to keep my guitar paraphernalia in (strings, plectrums, e-bow etc.). They are really useful!

What a clever reuse (re-purpose?) of an otherwise landfill addition. My husband could use these in his man cave garage. Nuts, bolts, bits… Not to mention, that you’ve given me a few ideas. 🙂

The fact that the lid snaps firmly closed is a real plus, given how often I knock things off shelves in my version of a man cave (it’s more a geek’s scrapyard)!
